About Land Cover (GLCNMO) data

The Global Land Cover by National Mapping Organizations (GLCNMO) is the data of 1km (30 arc seconds) grid with 20 land cover items. The data were created by using MODIS data observed in 2003 (TERRA Satellite) with the cooperation of NMOs of the world in providing training data and validation. The classification is based on LCCS developed by FAO. Therefore, it is possible to compare and integrate GLCNMO and other land cover data products based on LCCS.

Agreement for use

<<Agreement>>
Article 1. Persons (here-in-after referred to as "users") who wish to download Global Map-Global Land Cover (GLCNMO) and Global Map-Percent Tree Cover (here-in-after referred to as "data") shall agree to the content of this agreement.

<<Definition of data use>>
Article 2. Data use refers to such cases as: part or whole data are; used for other products; duplicated for distribution; provided for browsing; used for academic literature; and inserted directly into books, web pages, pamphlets, etc. The resulting profit will not be brought to account.

<<User registration and reception>>
Article 3. Users who wish to use data shall write in the necessary items on Registration for the Use of Global Map form in the Home page of ISCGM. The completed form will be sent to the Secretariat of ISCGM automatically. The Secretariat of ISCGM, upon receipt, will acknowledge the users receipt of the registration.

<<Description of data source and copyright>>
Article 4. Users shall mark the data source and indicate copyright on the product when they used the data in order to make known that they used the data for their products. The names of data sources are "Global Map-Global Land Cover (GLCNMO)" and "Global Map-Percent Tree Cover," and the description of copyright is "Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, Chiba University and collaborating organizations."

The data is available in two kinds of formats (BIL and TIFF).
BIL data is the official Global Map format, and suitable for GIS software.
Even if you do not have GIS software, you can see the TIFF data with an image viewer.

You will need registration to use Global map Land Cover (GLCNMO).

The data is divided into the domain of the tiles in the red shown on the map below.
First, please select the area of your interest. (Or click the area on the map)
GLCNMO Index 1 (from 180 degrees W. to 60 degrees W., South hemisphere)
GLCNMO Index 2 (from 180 degrees W. to 60 degrees W., North hemisphere)
GLCNMO Index 3 (from 60 degrees W. to 60 degrees E., South hemisphere)
GLCNMO Index 4 (from 60 degrees W. to 60 degrees E., North hemisphere)
GLCNMO Index 5 (from 60 degrees E. to 180 degrees E., South hemisphere)
GLCNMO Index 6 (from 60 degrees E. to 180 degrees E., North hemisphere)

TIFF format

You can also download the data in TIFF format with world file for georeferencing.
Please select (click on the following figure) the area of your interest, and then you can download a compressed file which contains relevant 4 files (TIFF data, world file, metadata and color information).
The data is divided into 72 tiles shown in the map below.
The range of each tile is 30 degrees by 30 degrees with 30 seconds resolution (3,600 pixels by 3,600 pixels).
